Motorcycle Repair: 1985 Goldwing interstate 1200GL., goldwing interstate, gas bike

Question
Bike has been sitting for
awhile. Cleaned carbs, changed gas. Bike will run for awhile but will shut down after awhile. Will back fire through exhaust in trying to restart.Found no spark in two plugs changed coil bike started but after 5min.stopped.Did it several times, so put in old coil and bile ran but again stopped. When the bike is being turned over it will backfire, sometimes starting. It seems as if something is stopping the spark if it makes sense. Will wait 5min then will try again and most times it will start. When it is running its smooth and takes it gas instantly. The temp seems to be normal and the fan comes on so theres no overheating. As i said before the bike has been sitting for quite a long time, as I had to change gas and brake fluid. Don't know if bike was running at the time.Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Randy

Answer
The fact that the old coil and the new coil behave about the same indicates the problem is somewhere else.  I'm betting the ignition module is going bad.  I had a similar problem on my V65.  The bike ran good for a few minutes until I got 1/4 mile down the road and it parked me on the side of the road.  There's not much else to go wrong in the ignition system except the coil, pickup and the ignition module.
