Motorcycle Repair: hydraulic slave cylinder leak, clutch master cylinder, v65 magna

Question
I have a 1984 V65 magna that has been sitting for about 14 years and only has 6000 miles on it. When i got it home there was nothing behind the clutch. So i opened up the clutch master cylinder ther was all kinds of gunk in there. So i took the time and cleaned it out including the line and then bleed the system. I got the clutch back ended up getting it running pretty good and then the slave cylinder started to leak. So i rebuilt the slave cylinder and it had all the same gunk in it, and i cleaned it up real good and the clutch works great. I mean this thing will really get it but the slave cylinder is still leaking and getting worse every time i ride it. Now i noticed behind the slave cylinder where the push rod goes in is a rubber seal of some sort and half of it is soft and the other side is hard. Could this be the problem? I dont think this has anything to do with it but the clutch is noisy when engaged and goes away when disengaged. Bushing or somthing?

Answer
The push rod is what actually releases the clutch.  The slave cylinder pushes on that rod and it releases the pressure plate on the clutch basket.  I have a couple of those bike and you are right they can flat get to it when they are running good.

I'm betting the slave cylinder is still leaking around that large lip seal. All the gunk you cleaned out is congealed brake fluid.  It can harden into almost a varnish and can be pretty difficult to clean out without scraping the stuff off.  I'd recommend you pull it a part again and take a 3M pad and clean the inside of the housing and all around that seal.  If the seal is still in good shape it should seal up or you may have to replace that large seal.

The seal around the clutch rod won't cause the clutch to leak.  If it leaking oil would be coming out.
