Motorcycle Repair: cx500 carb issues, CX500, air cutoff

Question
Bob, I think this bike has other carb issues as well. I would like to know if the float level is adjustable and maybe something about the air cut out valves. It seems as though im losing fuel as well. while riding twisting turning country roads, it seems like im losing fuel in the corners when im really gettin on it. I throttle it, it boggs down like an accelerator pump then when i let off and throttle again, POW! backfire out the exhaust. My clymer(?) manual does not give specifics about carb rebuilds. Never even mentioned air cut valves. And my floats did not seem adjustable. I think i could be emptying the bowls and they not filing up fast enough or air cut out could be allowing unburned fuel into the exhaust. This is a project bike with what seems like multiple probs. the bike is very clean and looks like it has been well taken care of. I like it a lo and do not want to give up on it but im losing patience. Thank you so much.        Sincerely, Josh Nelson

Answer
I'm not sure about CX500s, but GL500s have non-adjustable plastic floats. I think at least early CXs had adjustable ones.
If float adjustment is possible it will be covered in the Factory Shop Manual.

Bikes of that era came from the factory with lean idle mixtures to help them pass the poorly designed emissions tests of the day. The air cutoff valve is there to reduce popping on trailing throttle caused by the lean mixture.

This sounds like a probelm that would be better dealt with on a CX specific forum like http://choppercharles.com/cs/forums/ (free to join) where there are lots of people with your exact model who can tell you what they did. Someone there can tell you where to download the manual too.
