Motorcycle Repair: 83 gl1100 interstate, gl1100, cold reading

Have no temp reading.  Is it typical for the sensor to go out or should I look toward the gauge itself.  Can the sensor be ohmed out to check for funtionality and if so what should the initial cold reading be and typical others during warming?  Thanks Curt

It could be either.  The temp gage looks at the resistance on the sensor and resisters a temp based on the change in resistance. Try disconnecting the sensor wire and grounding it and see if the gage moves. It should peg out on the hot side of the gage.  I don't know what the resistance reading should be but something in the 16-120 ohm range from cold to hot, I think.
