Motorcycle Repair: No Spark - 1973 Honda SL 125 s, honda sl 125, couple questions

Question
I just had a couple questions about my 1973 Honda Sl125s, It has been
sitting for about 5 years and I have been in the process of trying to get it
back running again.
My 1st obstacle has been that I can't a spark. I just replaced the battery and
it is putting out a constant 6v, The spark plug looks alright, but I haven't
played with the points enough to tell if that could be a problem (I am a rookie
in dealing with motorcycles) I didn't know exactly how to check the correct
position that it should be in to create the arc.

And also I didn't know if there is any way to check and see if it is a problem
with the ignition coil or the condenser, or even the entire wiring. Is there a
good way to check that?

And if you had any other good suggestions on what could be a problem and
or a way to check it that would be great

And did you know a good place for a service/repair manual for older
honda's?

Thanks

Answer
Well, it's going to be process of elimination for this one.  There could be a whole bunch of reasons why there's no spark. First, I'd recommend you see if you can find a manual for this one.  I can give you a few pointers to get you started but the manual can take you through the process step by step.  First thing to do is adjust the points. Put the crank at top dead center, "T" on the flywheel.  The point gaps should be set at .014 of an inch.  You will need to then rotate the point plate to get the correct timing. The points should break open when the "F" mark lines up with the indicator on the cover.   Make sure the points are clean so you get a good ground for the ignition system.

After the points are set you just have to check things one at a time until you get things working.  That bike needs a battery to fire the plugs so make sure it's charged before starting the troubleshooting.

Good Luck
