Motorcycle Repair: Shadow Idles OK but sputters and stalls when throttle is advanced, vt700, fuel line

Question
My 1986 VT700 Shadow would not run except when ether was sprayed in air intakes, so I took both carbs off and cleaned
bowls and jets with carb cleaner and compressed air.  Now it will start and will hold a nice smooth idle, but when throttle is advanced, engine hesitates, sputters and won't smoothly rev to higher rpms and wants to stall out.  Plugs look good.
Fuel filter is not clogged and fuel pump is pumping fuel out of the fuel line.  What do you think is going on?  I have the Clymer repair manual for this bike but have not found the answer to this issue.  What should I try?

Answer
Sounds like the carbs are still running lean.  Did you set the float level? If you pull the choke on, I think you'll find it runs better and that indicates it's still running too lean. Check the float levels and make sure the main jets are clean and the slides move up and down freely in the carb bodies.
