Motorcycle Repair: starter, clutch cable, meter check

Question
My 91 sporster started fine in the morning then after two stops, just whined when I tried to start it. I was told it was the starter so I changed that and it needed a new clutch cable so I changed that at the same time. It didn't fix the problem so I was told it must be the relay switch, so I changed that, no help, so then I replaced the battery also. It will start right up sometimes, but mostly it just whines when I try to start it. I tested the old starter and it spins but doesn't engage. Any suggestions?

Answer
Pull your primary cover and check the ring gear on the clutch to see if its damaged. You can bump the starter while the cover is off and see if the starter is ingaging the ring gear. Also, check to make sure you are charging. With a volt meter check at the battery. You should be showing around 13.5 volts at 2000RPMs
Good luck and happy riding
