Motorcycle Repair: 01 FXDL Starter removal, starter clutch, starter removal

Question
Go to start this bike and it sounds like two gears crashing into each other.At times it will catch, turn over and fire. Has new Batt. Is it a starter clutch or drive??? If it is do I have to remove primary cover to get to bolts etc: I work on big trucks & have tools  Don't know a thing about bikes!!!! Any help GREATLY APPEC.

If you plan on working you your bike your best bet is to get a service manual. It will really help you with your project.
Yes, you have to remove the primary cover to get to the jackshaft, which has to be removed. Your problem could be the jackshaft, starter clutch, ring gear on the clutch or starter drive. You need to remove them to see which one the problem is
