Motorcycle Repair: motorcycle running rich, leakdown tester, leak down test

Question
QUESTION: I have changed the plugs three times now on my 1979 Low Rider (1200) and bike runs fine for a few days but, then all of a sudden it runs real rich on the front cyclinder. The bike will actually start popping and spitting fire out the exhaust pipe for front cyclinder. When I remove the plugs the one from the front is all black. Any ideas as to what my problem is and any solutions?
Thanks

ANSWER: First, I would do a OHMs test on the coil and plug wires. If they are ok, then do a compression test and a leak down test on the cylinders

QUESTION: what kind of resistance readings am i looking for on the plug wires and coil? And how do i do a leak down test on the cyclinders? thanks for all your help. you have helped me before with other problems.
thanks

ANSWER: To do a leakdown test you have to have a leakdown tester. What youa re doing is putting pressure on the cylinder and measuring how long it take to leak and compairing the front to rear.
On the coil you should and plug wires, are you running points or electronic ignition?

QUESTION: I am running an electronic ignition and know you have got me thinking. My battery is not it the best of shaped and I have to charge it often to turn bike over. Bike set idle for about a year. I have already rebuilt the Kehin carburetor. Is it possible the weak battery could be part of my problem. Not enough juice to turn over the ignition properly? I am not that experinced of a mechanic. I really rely on the internet for help.

Thanks

Answer
If you have to charge the battery all the time then its time to replace it. It might not be holding enough charge. Once you have installed the new battery do a voltage test at the battery when the bike is running at around 2000 RPM and let me know what voltage you get
