Motorcycle Repair: FLH 1200 year 72 smoking, blue grey smoke, piston rings

Question
Hi Mike
At slow idle my bike is smoking (blue greyish) from only cylinder 1 exhaust pipe (smells like oil burning in the smoke) . The S &S carb super B is adjusted fine . The points ok - the timing okay. Then it could be the oil breather valve gear that is out of timing , but then both pipes would smoke  - or ?
What checks can i make ? Is it a broken piston oil ring or a defective inlet valve or something like that ? A too tight valve - or ? The motor was overhauled 4 years ago and has done 5ooo miles since then.

Kind regards
Carsten

Answer
Blue/grey smoke would indicate that you are burning oil. the two places you can get oil from are the valve guides or the piston rings. You can do a compression test and a bleed down test, but I think your going to have to pull the top end.
