Motorcycle Repair: brake light, harley sportster, brake switch

I have a 1984 harley sportster. when i turn the key the brake light comes on as if the brake is applied. Any ideas?

Check your handlebars where the brake lever is. You will see that the brake lever and the throttle are held together around the handlebars. They are in two different sections. These sections must be pushed tightly together or the brake switch will not be pushed in.
