Motorcycle Repair: 04 Harley Davidson 1200 Sortster Custom, cold motor, locknut

I have a 04 Harley that needs the primary chain adjusted. It is rattling and hitting the primary cover. Can it be adjusted without taking the entire primary cover off?

Yes. Adjust it from under the primary cover. There is a bolt with a locknut on it. remove the small inspection cover in the center of the primary cover and you can feel the chain adjustment. Adjust it so you have about 1/2 inch play in the chain and make sure you do it with a cold motor
