Motorcycle Repair: 1979 Sportster xlh 1000 Rim sizing, 16 wheels, mag wheels

Question
We have the original mag wheels, 19"front, 18"rear, on our bike now. My husband would love to get some chrome wheels 19" front and 16" rear. I have been searching for deals to surprise him, but some people say any 19"/16" wheels with dual disc brakes on front/ single rear/ will fit??? Others say that I must get a 77-84 only? Some say that the axle measurement must match and then there is 35mm and 39mm (not sure what this is measuring) and even more confusing some are 3/4" or 1"??? I need help. What must match, what do I need to measure? Any guidance would be appreciated.

Answer
What you need is wheels that will fit a 78 to 83 sportster. Going with different years you will get a different width on the hub. The 35mm and 39mm means the fork size. the 3/4 and the 1" relates to the axle size. you have a 3/4 inch axle and 35mm forks.
Good luck and happy riding
