Motorcycle Repair: Buying a 1981 Honda Custom 650cc Motorbike, honda custom, model bikes

Question
I'm looking to buy a 1981 Honda Custom 650cc Motorbike. They are asking $2500 for it. It only has 12,300 Kms on it and the history is well known. I've heard that these bikes can have continual charging problems. I don't want to be taken. Is this too high of a price?
Thanks
Maureen

Answer
Maureen, I can't comment on the value of a bike.  It depends so much on the condition, location and the desirability of the model.   Bikes in California go for a lot higher price than those in the mid-west.  The cost of living is higher in California and folks are willing to spend their money more freely.  I have a policy not to pay more than $1000 for any vehicle but that's because I'm cheap and I can fix about anything I get.  I usually get them with something wrong and fix them. Most of the time it works out.

A 81 custom isn't particularly a collectors bike but they are good transportation.  For that price and age, it would need to be in near perfect condition. So I guess you have a decision to make.

Sorry
