Motorcycle Repair: Carb problem., air fuel mixture, suzuki katana

Question
Hi. I have a 1990 suzuki katana 750f. I know you only have experience with hondas but this is a carb issue so im hoping you have an answer for me. The bike starts and idles fine. I just put new plugs and coils in it. When accelerating through low range it accelerates quick, getting into mid range is when it bogs out for a second then takes off through high range. I have taken apart the carbs and cleaned them. Im not really sure what i was doing but i have a repair manual and cleaned them the best i could. Any information will be helpfull. Thankz.

Answer
The problem is that the carbs are leaning out the air fuel mixture in the mid-range and that's the reduced acceleration you feel.  I don't know if the Suzuki's have constant velocity (CV) carbs or throttle slides.  If they are CV carbs, the slides could be dirty and lifting slowly.  If the carbs have slides, the main jets could be partially plugged. The mid-range fuel is controlled by the needles and the main jets.  The needles are the long brass needles hanging down from the slides. They limit the fuel from about 1/8th throttle to about 3/4 throttle.  After that, the main jet size is the dominate control. A low float level could cause what you describe too. You may also have an accelerator pump on the carbs that isn't injecting the right amount of fuel when you crack open the throttle.  Sorry, I'm just not that familiar with other brands.  I can figure them out when I can see what I'm working on but I'm just guessing here on what's on your bike.

Good Luck
