Motorcycle Repair: 84 Honda VT500C Shadow, honda vt500c, solenoid starter

Question
Firstly bike was sitting for 11 years.  Soaked pistons/ring with WD40/fogging oil/releasal.  Put in new battery, new starter solenoid, starter tested & works, Stator is magentized, flywheel turn & starter gears, but when the starter button is pressed the gears stick.  Next ... replace starter clutch???

Answer
Peter, I'm not sure what you mean when you say the gears stick.  Does the engine turn over at all?  Those systems are pretty simple as you can see.  The starter clutch should rotate freely in one direction and lock up when turned the other direction.  If it does, that's not the problem.  Was the engine frozen when you went to start it?  If so, the engine just may have too much resistance for the starter to crank it over.  Try taking the plugs out and turn the crank with a wrench.  It should turn over very freely with little or no resistance.  If it doesn't, you may need to loosen it up before trying to use the starter motor to crank it.

I've had some success, by just pushing the bike while in gear with the plugs out to loosen up a tight engine.  Put a little oil in the cylinders to lubricate the top end before pushing the bike...better yet, invite a friend over to push the bike for you.
