Motorcycle Repair: 73/74 honda, cylinder car, leaded fuel

Question
Hi, Thanks for your time, I have two question if's thats ok.
one is how do you hook up a dwell/tach bench style meter
two a 2 cycle scramble see I have one on the bars but I don't trust it. Sec one, does the late 73 sold in the u.s.a. as a 74" 450cc scramble Design to run off leaded or unlead fuel
thank you again! Shawn

Answer
Shawn, I don't know of a way to use a typical dwell/tach meter on a 450 scrambler.  The problem is that the coils are separate with separate points rather than have a single point to fire the coil four times every two revs.  I suppose you could just hook them up the way you would on any 4 cylinder car and multiply the rpm by 4. I've never had any issues with the tach that came on the bike so I don't know what you're concerned about.  I used to have a 1970 Scrambler.  I loved that bike.  For the time, it was the original super bike.  I would eat 750 Triumphs.

The engine was originally designed to run with leaded fuel but it has stellite valve faces so it will do pretty well on unleaded fuel.

Sorry for the late response, I've been out of town on vacation.

Regards,
Rich
