Motorcycle Repair: 1972 honda cb 750 k four, honda cb 750, gasket sets

Question
Rich,
I am having my bike worked on in a shop and just came to buying the piston rings. How many sets of rings will I need to do the entire job and how many rings are in a set? I am also curious as to how many gasket sets I will need. I just paid 42.82 at south bay motor sports for one set of rings and 18.53 for the gasket set. Is this a fair price? I also have other questions but will wait until I get a response to ask them. Thanks.

Answer
Well, each piston has three rings, the top compression ring, the oil scraper middle ring and the lower oil control ring.  Normally, you have to buy a set for rings for each piston, so you'll need four sets. I'm not sure what you mean by a gasket set.  Typically, the top end set has all of the gaskets you'll need for a top end overhaul so you'll need only one set.

I just looked on Ebay and you can get an aftermarket set of rings for all 4 pistons for $35 and a complete gasket set for $80 so I guess you'll have to decide if what you paid is a reasonable price.

Good Luck
Rich
