Motorcycle Repair: rpm problem, yamaha vstar, intake tubes

Question
i have a 2003 yamaha vstar 1100 classic. my bike has set for about 8 months with 10,000 miles on it. my question is : when i start my bike it will idol fine, but as soon at i touch the throttle the rpm,s climb and stay there. i can not get the rpm's to drop unless i shut off the bike and let it set for awhile, then when i start it again it go's through the same process.... what can it be ?

Answer
Greg,

The carbs are probably a bit sticky from
sitting so long. The throttle is
controlled by vacuum slides that
are under the top caps on the carbs.
The slides may need cleaning or
some carb cleaner sprayed in the carb mouth may help.

You may have an air leak on the carb intake tubes
somewhere which would lean the fuel
mixture. Check this with carb cleaner also.
Check for any stiff cables
or choke stuck on.

Check for any open vacuum lines.

Carbs can get very corroded inside
after 8 months by the old fuel.
They may need cleaning or at least
fill the float bowls with Yamaha carb
cleaner and let them soak overnight
and drain them again.
