Motorcycle Repair: 1972 Sportster, breather vent, oil drip

Question
I've had my 72 Sportster in storage for the winter, I pulled it out, cleaned it up and went to kickstart her, there lies the problem, everytime I kick it over, oil comes gushing out of the breather vent line, this is completely new, what happened and how do I fix it? Thank-you.

Answer
Inside your oil pump there is a small ball and spring. the ball is suppose to keep the oil from draining out the oil tank and into the bottom of the motor. Sometimes the ball gets a speck of dirt on it and lets oil drip into the motor. Since you had the bike sitting all winter, alot probably dripped in. When you go to start the bike, the oil pump cant pump the oil back fast enough and it comes out the vent. It doenst hurt anything, justs makes a mess. Once the bike is running it will clear itself and be ok. If it keeps doing it you will have to pull the spring and ball and inspect them for damage
Good luck and happy riding
