Motorcycle Repair: 73 RT3 360, crankshaft seal, air screw

Question
Mr.Samel, My 360 idles great (about 1500) when cold. Starts great and seems to have good power thru the gears. But when it gets hot it jumps to about 2000 at idle and bounces up and down. I have taken the carb off and blown it out with air, have the air screw out 1 and 1/2 turns. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Answer
Gerald,

It is likely a small air leak somewhere.
Possible trouble spots are:
the carb flange o-ring
the reed valve
Flywheel side crankshaft seal.
Cylinder base gasket.

You can try spraying some carb cleaner
around the gaskets and see if engine
speed changes.

If you pop the flywheel off, check the
contact points for burning. This
indicates a bad condensor.

Check the advance cam that opens
the points. If it has springs or
weights make sure it turns slightly
forward okay.

Check spark plug cap.

The crank seal can be changed from
outside with care. You could try some
heavy grease on the outside of
it and see if it helps the idle.

Try the idle air screw at 1/2 turn and see
if it helps.

Check air filter, fuel flow from tank and ignition timing.

Is compression good?
