Motorcycle Repair: yamaha 700xv virago 1984, plug caps, air leaks

Question
When I ride my yamaha 700xv virago, when the motor still is cold I the motor has good power and can accelerat till 6,000 rpm.(i think it should even more than that..??) I ride a few miles then rpm goes down to 4,000 finally to 3000 rpm and just doesnt have any power left. Sounds like the motor turns heavy.  Oil level is good. Battery is very bad. Can you help me?

Answer
Stanley,

these bikes definitely need
a good battery and clean tight
connections to run well.
The ignition is a transistor controlled
type and will act poorly if any
electrical connectors are corroded
at all.

If you think the engine is turning
heavily it might be a good idea to
have the compression checked.
If the compression is under
120 psi you may need engine work.

Check all the usual things like
air filter, spark plugs and plug
caps. Drain the carbs and try some
fresh fuel or additive like "Seafoam"
You could fill the carbs with Yamaha
carb cleaner and let them soak awhile.

Check around the carb intake
flanges for air leaks using wd40 or
carb cleaner.

Clean all the stator and regulator
connectors with electronic cleaner spray,
available at electronic stores.
This is important because
bad connections cause cylinders to cut out.

Check if it is charging about 14 volts at the battery, no higher
or regulator could be faulty which also
messes up the ignition module.

Check if oil is pumping ok to the
top of the engine. It should look
oily inside.

The virago ignition modules can fail,
