Motorcycle Repair: cam shaft chain, cam gears, cam shaft

Question
need to know how to replace the chain that goes from the cam down to the crank and how to time it

Answer
Billy,

you never gave me the year, make or model of
the bike, there is no way I can answer your
question. There are thousands of different
engines and they all have different cam
chain designs and procedures for replacing
the chain. You can break the chain on some
and run the new chain through but
timing varies from one to another.
On Hondas the cam gears have dots
that line up with a mark on the head,
with the flywheel set on "T".
On others bikes there are lines on the
cam gears that align with the cylinder
head mating surface. The important
thing is that the valves are closed
when the piston is at the top of the
cylinder so you don't bend the valves.
They all have various marks for timing,
but the "T" mark is used alot and
also the other cam gear marks.
