Motorcycle Repair: oil change, shovel head, oil tank

Question
Hello, I have a 85 sportster but my friends say the motor looks like a shovel head, I am tring to change the oil and I am not sure where to drain the oil out of the case. I can drain the oil out of the tank, I'm just not sure of the case, also what should I use for oil and once it changed is there a way to check to make sure there is oil in the case??   Thanks so much for your time and help   Ed Conklin

Answer
The 85 sportster is a shovelhead. there is not drain for the bottom end of the case, just drain the oil tank. Make sure you start the bike and let it warm up before you change the oil.
There is oil in the primary, however. the drain for it is under the primary close tothe back of it.
Good luck and happy riding
