Motorcycle Repair: 1981 Suzuki GS550, suzuki gs550, rubber diaphragms

Question
Bike will not start without giving it raw gas. Once it is running I can shut it down and restart perfectly.  If I leave it turned off for about 15-20 minutes it will not start again with out priming it. I have cleaned all the gas lines and tank, removed the carbs and cleaned all the jets, needle valves and slides. Checked for vacume leaks on the intake manifolds. When it does run it idles ok but falters when open up the throttle. Spark Plugs are new and there is spark.

Answer
Darrell,

-it sounds to me like the float levels
are set too low. When correct the fuel in the float
bowl should sit about 4mm below the
mating surface of the carb body and the float
bowl.

-Another thing to check is the function
of your fuel petcock. These have rubber diaphragms
that can be faulty or cracked preventing
the fuel from flowing reliably to the carbs.
Try it on "PRI"

-a third thing is under the float valve
seats there are little wire filter screens,
were these checked when the carbs were off?

-fourth thing is the gas tank or cap air vent.
If this is plugged it will restrict the fuel
flow by creating a vacuum in the tank.
