Motorcycle Repair: manco talon, override switch, fuse holders

Question
Hello,  I have a 2008 Manco talon,276cc, 4X4, (chinese) ATV.  It is used on a farm.  I have had it it in for several problems from hard to start/run in the cold to rough running.  I got it back the other day and ran it for 15-20 minutes and it just quit.  It turns over fine.  I check spark. None.  I do smell gas as it is turning over.  I thinking it may be the coil.  What is the numbers I should look for on the output for the coil and CDI etc.  Any other thoughts.

Thanks for your help

Answer
Eric,

first off check your fuses and fuse holders.
Use a good battery.
Use a good or new spark plug.

Then check if there is power getting
through the kill switch to the pink
wire on the ignition coil.

(primary winding is: 3.6-4.8 ohms)
(secondary winding is 10.7K-14.5K ohms
with the cap off, the cap is 5K or 5000 ohms.)

If there is no power, check the kill switch
as power should come from there to the coil.

If you have power to the coil then disconnect and check
the pickup coil resistance.(168-252 ohms.)
Put multimeter positive lead on the black/yellow wire.
negative lead on the black/red wire.

Pickup should have an air gap of .016"-.030"
There may be a speed limiter on the end of the black/yellow
wire too, you can try to temporarily disconnect it's
red/black (maybe purple on some) wire to see if it helps. Some bikes have an override
switch for the speed limiter that could be faulty.

Check all the wire connectors etc.
Check any ground wires to the frame.
Check for sheared flywheel key.

If you have all this checked and
it is okay then it is likely the ignition
module itself, no test for that just replace.
You can try cooling it with an ice pack and
see if it works for awhile.
