Motorcycle Repair: Charging system, steep cliff, old battery

Question
If it doesn't cost me anything for an answer, I'd like to ask about my 1995 Harley Davidson FLHT.  The first time I started my bike this year, it wouldn't turn over, so I jump started it and it ran OK except my volt meter was only registering 10 volts at idle. When I gave it some throttle it went down to 6 volts.  I took it for a 30 minute ride and NO change.  Stupid me hasn't purchased a battery tender yet ( I only have 3 Harleys ).  The last time I rode it was three months ago, and there was NO problem with it then, so I just purchased a new maintenance free battery from the local H.D. dealer, thinking that my 6 year old battery needed replaced anyway and maybe my charging problem was a dead cell.  I'm probably going to install the battery in a couple of days, could you point me in the right direction if this battery replacement doesn't solve the charging problem ( and I don't mean a steep cliff, lol ). Thank you for taking the time to read my question.  By the way I have plenty of tools for any tests you might suggest, I built my 68 pan-shovel (chopper) about 22 years ago, so I'm not too bad at turning a wrench.

Answer
First, check the voltage at the battery witht he bike running. At 2000 RPM you should show around 13.5 volts. If not, then unplug the stator and do a OHMs test on it. then do a AC voltage on it with the bike running. You should show around 60 AV volts over 2000 RPM
If the stator doenst pass then it bad, if it passes the above tests them the regulator is bad.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
