Motorcycle Repair: 1970SL 350 timing, point gap, light key

Question
How do you check the points/timing on this cycle?

Answer
Phillip,

The points are under the top
left engine cap. Make sure
they are shiny clean and flat.
Check that the mechanical timing advance
under them is able turn slightly forward.
Grease the point cam sparingly.
Set the bike up straight and remove
the lower left engine cover,
some small amount of oil may be lost.

The flywheel or rotor has an "F"
mark on it and some have a "LF"
mark for "left" cylinder.

Set the left points at .014" gap.

Turn the backing plate so the
points just break open when the
"LF" mark lines up on the rotor and index
pointer on the engine case.
The points need to break open
on "LF" while turning the engine anti-clockwise
or in it's running direction.

Now set the right set of points to break open
on "F" marks. Don't move the backing plate
as the left points are set already.
Just vary the point gap to get it right.

If the right side points don't open up close to .014" total
it means the fibre heel is worn out on the points.

You can use a timing light or a small
test light(key on)to set the timing.
