Motorcycle Repair: HD Starter, starter clutch, clutch basket

Starter on my 01 HD low rider makes a hell of a noise.Will start to engage then it makes a grinding noise (gear againstgear) and it stops turning motor over.Is it a starter drive or weak solinoid ???? Has new batt. Also do I have to take primary cover off or just unbolt the starter to remove

Your going to have to pull the starter. Its either the starter clutch or a bearing is going out.
You have to remove the primary cover, clutch basket and motor sprocket to remove the starter. The jackshaft has to be removed to get the starter out
