Motorcycle Repair: cam chain adjustment on 1982 Kawasaki 305 CSR, starter clutch, stethascope

Question
Wayne, I have loosened the nut on the cam chain tensioner.  Do I now just
tighten the adjusting bolt till it is hard to turn or what?  Thanks,  Graham

Answer
Graham,

clunking may be in the starter clutch
if the springs are weak or worn
engine parts such as clutch hub
or other. Can you isolate the sound
with a mechanics stethascope
or sounding rod (long screwdriver)
held to your ear?
These engines are fairly straightforward
in design, not much to go wrong.
-----------------------------------------
if your tensioner is automatic,
you just loosen the locknut and the bolt.
Then tighten the bolt and locknut again.
If it is noisy it might be worn out.

Some older Kawasaki's had a manual
adjuster. These had a screwdriver
slot in the back which turned clockwise
to tighten.

Most 305's have the auto adjuster
which is spring loaded and the plunger
is held in a little bearing.

When these get worn they don't hold
well anymore. These can fly apart
if you remove the unit, so be careful.

Also, they have to be compressed and the bolt
tightened to hold them together when
putting the unit back on the engine.
