Motorcycle Repair: fuel leak, electric fuel pump, fuel stabilizer

Question
I have a 1995 Kawasaki vn1500 it was leaking gas through carburetors and eashuset I pulled plugs and turnover matter and put plugs back in and tried to start and it started then stalled like it was out of gas ? could be vacuum line displaced

Answer
Gerr,  Dunno much about Kawis, but a few things come to mind.

1: Did you put the old plugs back in or replace with new ones. Old plugs will be fuel fouled and that will make starting very difficult. You might want to leave the plugs out overnight, to help the cylinders evaporate fuel solids.

2: The carbs were leaking because the bike sat, in all likelihood, so that the old gas evaporated and gummed up the float valves, causing them to drain fuel from the lines and beyond if you didn't have the petcock shut off. The carbs may still be dry, depending on if the bike has an electric fuel pump or not. If it does, you probably just pumped more decaying fuel back into the carbs, where it is trying to be lit by fouled plugs.

3: If the bike has been sitting for a few months, without fuel stabilizer in the tank, then the idle jet is probably plugged up, too.

So, you have stale fuel, fouled plugs and plugged carb jets, if my guess is fairly correct. Any vacuum lines attached to the petcock (if vacuum operated) will add to the problems you are facing. If there was a LOT of fuel in the exhaust system, there may not be much left in the tank, anyway. Drain whatever is left and refill with fresh fuel. Clean/replace the fuel filter, put in new plugs and try again. If it doesn't light off, then the carb(s) will need to be pulled and cleaned, too.
