Motorcycle Repair: 87 Yamaha srx250, float bowl, carborator

Question
My bike started to leak in my garage over the winter and I took the carburator off and noticed that the O-rings on the outside were damaged, I replaced the O-rings, put back on the carborator, changed the oil and oil filter and eventually got the bike to turn over.  Once it turned over it seemed fine while the choke was out, i left the bike to get my gear on, when I came back the bike was idling at 6000rpm and when I put the choke back in the bike stopped. I am completley stumped on how I can fix this problem.  I didnt properly winterize the bike. This type of problem has never occured before.  Any suggestions?

Answer
Rusty,

it sounds like the jets or passageways
in the carb may be gummed up.
Make sure the throttle slide is closing okay as well.

You can also try draining the float bowl
and maybe spraying some carb cleaner
down the gas line and into the float
bowl. It may need the carb removed,
soaked in carb cleaner and the jets
and passageways blown out with air.

It is usually the main jet in the
bottom center of the carb that is plugged
or the small brass idle jet nearby.

The fuel tank should have fresh fuel also.
If the carb is not sealing properly
on the engine it may cause it to run lean
on fuel and rev up.
