Motorcycle Repair: 1982 honda magna 750v45, 1982 honda magna, battery check

I just bought the bike last spring I had some shorting out then replaced the fuse link hand no problems. I moved and haven't started it since September. I turned the key no nothing light, ect. Hooked the battery up to a charger and nothing It will start hooked up to the car but as soon as its off no lights nothing! Then in messing with it I now need a new Ignition Switch I will be getting today. My Question is would that be the alternator? This is my first bike and I am learning so please help! I have one other question Do most honda wiring to the Ignition Switch run through the head light? This one does!

I would replace your battery,them you will be able to check your charging system.After replacing the battery check the charging system by placing a meter on the battery when the bike is running. You should get about 14 volts. if not get back to me.  Jerry
