Motorcycle Repair: 1979 Sportster starting problem, starter problem, posibility

Question
QUESTION: I just bought a 1979 Sportster. It runs great(no smoke). It had a starter problem. When you push the start button the solenoid chatters. If you keep trying eventually it engages and turns the motor over and starts. When the engine is warm it doesn't do it. I replaced the solenoid with a new one out of the box. It still does the same thing. The battery is new and fully charged. The relay appears to be working.

ANSWER: Start the bike and when its running at around 2000 RPM what voltage are you showing at the battery?

QUESTION: Right now I'm having trouble getting the bike started and finding a way to get the readings. DUH.....How can I get my meter on both terminals of the battery to get the voltage reading with the battery in the bike?? Is there a posibility I'm dealing with a bad ground??

Answer
All you have to connect is the positive on the meter, you can attach the other one to any ground. You can use the head. You will probably hae to charge the battery up, or have the battery tested to see if its any good
Good luck and happy riding
