Motorcycle Repair: 1980 4 speed trans leak, chain sprocket, vent hole

Question
Hi Mike
I have a 1980 FXWG with a leaking 4 speed trans 29,000 miles
I not looking for a perfect seal. But by the end of this year. It was throwing so much oil my rear wheel was getting a heavy coat after an hour of riding. That is a little dangerous.

There seem to be two trains of thought on this repair.

1st A super nut and sealant will stop most of the leak.
I might get a few drops if the bike sits overnight.
I can live with that no problem.

2nd The oil seal collar inside the trans must also be
replaced, or the leak will start again soon just as bad.

I have the trans out. The 1 7/8" nut that holds the chain sprocket on was loose. It took an 1/8 of a turn just to make it hand snug, and there was no cork gasket behind it.
I checked my vent hole and it was clear.

Have you had much luck just putting the super nut and sealant on the shaft? After reading about a trans tear down.
It seems like after buying the tools required, and my time.
I would be better of to have a shop do it.

As usual all my friends have a lot of opinions.

number stamped on the trans is BH 9552

Answer
SInce you have the trans out and with the age of the trans, its probably time to go through it and make sure everything is ok inside. Also its time to install all new seals and gaskets. That would be the best way to solve your leaking problem.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
