Motorcycle Repair: 1977 honda z50, honda z50, friction discs

Question
The bike runs;I can push start it, but it wont kick start.
I read on the internet of parts for this bike related to the battery? I don't think these bikes had batteries?
If they did I still don't think that would effect kickstarting?

Answer
Andrew,

these bikes didn't have batteries,
what happens when you kickstart? Does it slip?

-If it is just slipping it means the
clutch needs adjusting or new friction discs.

-If the kickstart is not doing anything at all
it likely has a broken shaft or gears
which requires splitting the engine cases
to repair.

-to adjust the clutch, loosen the locknut
on the side of the clutch cover,
-turn the screw in or clockwise one turn,
-turn the screw counter-clockwise or out
until you feel some resistance.
-then turn it in or clockwise again
just 1/8 to 1/4 turn.
-tighten the locknut.
