Motorcycle Repair: clutch push rod adjustment, crankshaft seal, clutch side

Question
QUESTION: how far in do you adjust the screw with lock nut on the top of the clutch plate on a 1978 Yamaha 175 enduro.

ANSWER: Wayne,

Give the clutch cable some slack.
loosen the clutch locknut,
turn the screw anti-clockwise until it is loose,
then turn it in (clockwise) until it stops lightly.
Back it out (anti-clockwise) about 1/8-1/4 turn.
Tighten the locknut.
If the screw is too far in the clutch will slip,
if too far out clutch will not disengage
properly.

QUESTION: Hi Wayne thanks for you help.  Next question is on the carburator on the same bike.  It only runs with the choke knob pulled out.  Would I need to increase or decrease the float level to let more fuel in or less.

Answer
Hi again,

-Float level should allow the bowl to
be fairly full but
first thing is make sure you have a good
supply of fuel coming from the tank to
the carb. If it needs the choke on,
likely the idle or main jet is plugged
in the carb. The holes are small
and need to be checked carefully to
see they are clear.

-One other possibility not as common
is an air leak around the carb
to engine connections. Check with
some wd40 or carb cleaner spray.
See if engine speed changes.

-Sometimes on 2 stroke or 2 cycle engines
they can develop an air leak on the crankshaft seal under the
flywheel. This allows air to lean out the fuel mixture also.

-If the crankshaft seal on the clutch side is leaking
you will get lots of smoke from
it burning transmission oil.
