Motorcycle Repair: Carb pushing fuel out of puke tube & air filter, air vent, float bowl

Question
Hi,,I need your expertise..I own a 1985Honda Rebel 250..The bike was outside for several years..Ive opened the bowl, and carb,,it was varnished..I cleaned it,,I ordered a carbkit and replaced the needles and jets..The float seems to not respond once the bowl is full of fuel..it just lets it run through,,as though it is being pumped out..Ive checked the float for leaks,,its fine..The bike stars up,no problem..it just wants to push the gas out..everything appears to work in the carb,,What do you think Ive done wrong, or need to do to correct this problem..Thankyou

Answer
Jeannie,

there are a few possibilities for this fuel leak.

-the float could be faulty or misadjusted.
-Most floats can be adjusted unless the whole
thing is plastic. Sometimes the floats are no good.
-the float needle/valve has to shut off the fuel,
sometimes they are faulty, they stick or the valve is loose
in the carb body and leaking.
-the air vents in the upper part of the carb need
to be open to equalize air pressures.
-remove the float bowl, pull the gas line and blow
some low pressure air or fuel through it. Try lifting
the float up and down lightly and see if it shuts off
the air flow.
-it should shut off with the float about level.

Next:
-if you just replaced the jets without actually
cleaning all the little passages,
it could have a plugged air vent.
-you can either remove and clean the carb again or
-get some Yamaha carb cleaner and fill the carb bowl
and put it back on overnight. With any luck it might
clear things up. Try spraying some carb cleaner
spray into the carb vents to open them up.
If the passageways in the carb are severely varnished
they may need to be physically cleaned,
like with a guitar string or such.
Lastly make sure there is no pressure in your fuel tank,
if so it may have a plugged cap or tank vent.
(yes, I said Yamaha carb cleaner, it's good) ;)
As a second thought, is it possible you
have rust in the gas tank or a bad fuel line
that may be plugging up the float valve?
Maybe time to add a fuel filter in the gas line.
-Check that the rubber vent tubes hang down,
like the one on the float bowl bottom.
It does not connect back to another place on the carb.
