Motorcycle Repair: 1996 Virago 1100, radiator shops, virago 1100

Question
QUESTION: 1996/97 Virago 1100. Problem Idleing and warming up to ful running condition.
I have had this bike for almost 5 months. The first couple of months it was perfect then cold weather hit. Since the cold weather it has been nothing but problems. I first foulded out the plugs some how, have replaced them. Tested spark plug wires.
The bike will not start smoothly. I have to increase the idle with the idle screw on side of Carb. If I add the choke it gets worse. I can rev the engine while it is in neutral and sounds fine. Put in gear and try to take off and put put dead.
I have checked fuel and it is good. Have no clue where to start.

ANSWER: You are going to have to clean the carbs on the bike. During the warmer months you were probably not experiencing these problems because the bike did not need as much fuel. Remove the carbs and completely disassemble them. You will need to get some carb dip so you can soak them and get all the ports clean.

QUESTION: Is there a way to test to see if there is rust int he tank via a test strip or other modern device other than removing the tank.

Answer
No you will have to remove the tank and physically drain and inspect it. If there is rust in the tank or you are leary about it most radiator shops will coat the inside of them. This will keep the rust from getting in your gas. Also make sure to put a fuel filter in line if there is room.
