Motorcycle Repair: 1992 polaris trail boss 250, polaris trail boss, low beam

my polaris trail boss will only run with the lights on hi beam. on low beam or off it will barley idle, then back fire and die. any ideas would be greatly appreciated. thank you

I was unable to find a wiring diagram for
this model but can't see why the low beam would
affect the running unless there is a short
in the lighting switch or wiring. Is the light switch
in the same assembly as the kill switch?
Check there first. If I find a wiring diagram
I will let you know what I find.
