Motorcycle Repair: 1994 ninja zx6 shifter problem, ninja zx6, shaft

ok, whenever i shift down on my bike the shifter will stay down and not move back into place. same thing happens if i shift up, it will stay up. could you please help me out?

It sounds to me as though the return springs on the end of the shaft have either stretched out or broke. You are going to have to remove the cover and physically check the shifter fork that moves the drum for damage. Also has the bike been layed down on that side?? Even if teh shifter lever itself is not bent the shaft it connects to could be and is now binding where it goes thru the case.
