Motorcycle Repair: Engine shuts down, float bowls, battery cables

Question
I have an 83 Honda Shadow VT500C on which I just replaced the starter.  The bike starts great initially but now, after just a minute or two of running, the engine shuts down.  It will re-start but it's difficult and it shuts down again quickly.  All the lights stay on after the engine cuts, and I changed the spark plugs.  Seems odd, it didn't do that before when the old starter was working.  Any suggestions are appreciated.

Answer
Jason,

about all you can do is start checking
for loose connectors on the ignition module,
loose battery cables, loose fuses.
Then check for fuel to the carbs, check
the tank petcock valve and fuel filter.
Drain the float bowls and see if they
are filling up again. Check the choke.
Is there anything that could have been
disturbed when installing the new starter?
If you can narrow it down to fuel or
spark, that would help in finding the problem.
If it restarts I am suspecting a fuel
shortage but a loose connector or wire
could be intermittant as well.
