Motorcycle Repair: 1974 yamaha dt100, yamaha dt100, clutch gear

Question
I just got a new kickstarter for my cycle. When i put it onand tried it out,it just turned freely without starting it up like its broke inside.Do you know what is wrong and if you do ,do you think that it is relativly easy to fix and is it pricey? Also,do you suggest mixing gas with yamalube?  Thanks Ian

Answer
Ian,

-inside the case on the end of your kickstart
shaft there is a gear and a spring that
holds on to the gear.

-When you use your kickstart lever this spring causes the gear
to turn outward on a spiral or screw spline
and the gear engages the clutch gear and that
engages the engine gear.

-I suspect the spring is loose on the gear or
possibly a broken gear. It is possible but
not as likely for the other gears to be
damaged.

-the spring and gear are #9 and #10 in this
parts diagram:

-you will need to drain the oil and take off the clutch
cover to inspect these parts. The cost depends
on what's wrong.

-if you have a yamalube system that is working
okay, you add oil to the oil tank.
If you are talking about only using a premix
of gas and yamalube, that is okay with
about 4 ounces per gallon of fuel.
Use 2 cycle or 2 stroke yamalube.
