Motorcycle Repair: carb adjustment, air leaks, jet control

Question
i have a 88 gsx600 katana with the BTS31SS carbs. heres my problem when accelerating the bike seems to have decent power around 2000 rpm but anthing above that it has no power at all. ive taken the 4 carbs of numerous times cleaned and checked the  orifices for dirt nothing. im pretty sure that the problem lies in the piolt screw of the float level any advice and guidence would help emensly also the piolt screw for my bike says it needs to be at 2 turns out but i have it at 5.5 because it wont run at 2. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Answer
Nick,

-is the compression equal or near equal
on all the cylinders? 150 or higher PSI.
-The pilot screw won't have much effect
if any above 2000 rpm. Have you tried
new plugs and checked the air filter?
-do a run above 2000 rpm and pull in the
clutch and kill the engine quickly.
-Read the plug color, are they light colored=lean,
black=rich or tan color=good?
-if they are light colored, try setting the
floats so the carb bowls are near full of fuel.
or raise the carb needles a hair with a
shim or lower the clips if the carb has needle clips.
-the needle and main jet control most of your
fuel mixture over 2000 rpm. Of course the
float bowl has to have gas in it as well.
-is your ignition advance manual? If so
it may be stuck and firing late.
-is your fuel flow good to the carbs?
-check for air leaks around the intake
in case it's sucking air instead of fuel.
-are all your cylinders running,
do the pipes warm up about the same
from cold?
