Motorcycle Repair: 1976 Honda 750A, honda 750a, fuse holders

Question
QUESTION: The main fuse is overheating.  What is on that circuit that could be overheating the fuse?  It is not "blowing" the fuse -- it is melting the fuse box and the fuse after the bike runs for less than 10 minutes.  Disconnected the connection going to the fairing which houses the headlight and front turn signals - no change. Took electrical portion of ignition switch apart and cleaned it - no change.  Any suggestions?

ANSWER: David,

the 750's fuse box or fuse holders are the usual
culprit here. The fuse holders just don't
make a solid connection and the current
gets very high trying to cross the increased
resistance, hence the heat.

-Most owners end up replacing the box or coming up with
a fix of their own. The connections
to the battery of course must be clean
and tight and all frame grounds free
of corrosion and tight as well.

-check for any loose wires and check all main connectors.

-when a fuse blows it is usually a dead
short to ground but when it gets hot it means
poor connections or high resistance in the wiring.

QUESTION: i cleaned the connection in the fuse holder, and heated and resoldered the wires coming in to the back of the box.  should i move the wires to the spare fuse holder?

Answer
David,

-see if the fuse has cooled down with your recent repairs,
if not I would try moving the wires or
looking for a replacement.
-You can buy a separate blade type
fuse holder and wire that in
for a better connection.
The old fuse holders are a bit weak
and connect poorly.
