Motorcycle Repair: wont start after long ride, shaft drive, button battery

Question
i have a 1985 Kawasaki 1100LTD shaft drive.  replaced the battery in the beginning of the summer and used the bike a few times. if i stop the bike for any reason and then go to start it up again, it will not start.  it wont even crank as if the battery is dead.  i can pop the clutch and it will start and run fine. not sure what to look at first. is there an alternator or regulator?  thanks

Answer
Ron,

-check under the side cover for your starter relay,
see if it connects between the larger terminals
when you try the starter. It may be faulty.
They usually make a clicking noise when you
push the starter button.

-Battery has to be good and connections tight.

-The relay sends power to the starter. You can also
check the starter by applying power
to it directly or the relay cable that leads to the starter.

-your alternator and regulator do not
affect the starting system other than
if your battery is discharged.
