Motorcycle Repair: 1977 Ironhead sportster, harley service, answer points

QUESTION: I need to know how to get the timing back in and get the bike running again. Please.

ANSWER: Points or electronic? What did yu do the change it?

QUESTION: It's points.  I pulled the cover off and the gears fell out so I now have a Harley Davidson paperweight.


Answer
First, you have to install the cams back. There are marks on the cams and they have to lign up with each other as well as the pinion gear. You can see a pic of this in the harley service manual.
Install the points plate and set the points on the lobe. Adjust the points so they are just starting to open at TDC. This will get the bike running. Once the bike is running you have to set the timing with a timing light
