Motorcycle Repair: 1970 XLCH Sportster Tranny, clutch assembly, transmission area

Question
Each time lately when I've taken the bike out it has been developing a gradually worsening "slip" that seems to be in the transmission area. (engine revs up & spins free at the same time & then engages or catches back in gear with a jolt and finally smoothes out)  It does this mostly in the higher gears especially when I slow down & attempt to re-accelerate. Was hoping it wouldn't get worse & would be something I could live with for a while.  But last time out & 40 minutes into a good run on back country roads the gearbox started to grind terribly.  Brought bike to a stop & haven't run it since. Should I remove the primary side & clutch assembly to get at the access door & check out the tranny? New clutch recently installed, new drive sprocket, rear sprocket, and chain.  New parts have about 150 miles on them.  No problems up till now.  Needs new gearbox or parts to old one?  Any advice greatly appreciated.  Thanks, Steve

Answer
Check to make sure your sprocket is tight to the trans. Aslso check the clutch for slipage. If they check out then remove the trans and take a look at it. You are better off to rebuild it, instead of buy a new one. It would be cheaper.
Good luck and happy riding
