Motorcycle Repair: twin 88 cam tensioner problem, dealer charges, push rods

Question
QUESTION: I just had a 20k inspection and the dealer inspected my cam tensioners and says I need to replace for $600.  He says that if they go it'll be three times that to fix.  Am I being hosed?

ANSWER: The tentioners keep tention on the chains which turn the cams. They are tight on a spring and over time do wear. I am big on this design, since you have wear and parts to replace that soon. I prefer the gear driven cams. A little more noise, but not tentioners to replace.
The price they quoted you seems high to me, but I do not know what they charge an hour for labor. Labor costs are different all over the country. If it were me I would shop around for other prices. Also, check to see what it would cost to change over to gear driven cams
Good luck and happy riding

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Thanks Mike.  As a followup, the gear driven were more.  This dealer charges $80 and hour for labor.  Also, they have to replace the push rods, so they use the quick change ones instead of tearing the whole engine down.  Is that right?

Answer
Replacing the pushrods to adjustables is cheaper than tearing down the whold top end to do the change.
I know the gear diven ones are more, but it daves you in the long run on changing the rub blocks. At $80.00 per hour that is about right
Good luck and happy riding
