Motorcycle Repair: 1981 Yamaha Exciter 250, yamaha exciter 250, 10w30

Question
Hi Wayne.
I just purchased an '81 Exciter 250 w 10k mi. It runs/shifts smoothly and sounds great. There is no owner's manual, and I have not been able to find any specs for this bike online, nor support from Yamaha online.

Would you happen to know how much oil this bike requires?

The little window on the block is so old that I can't see anything through it, and when I open the filling cap and peer into the case, I don't see much oil. I can see a little at the bottom of the pan, but not much else.

The large gear wheel looks dry.

Thanks,

Phillip.

Answer
Phillip,

-if you are just changing the oil and filter
add 1.3 litres or 1.4 US quarts.

-If the engine was dry like after an overhaul,
you would add 1.6 litres or 1.7 US QT.

The oil should be midway or so in the level
window, but it is hard to see when clouded.
10W30 or 10W40 cycle oil would be okay for this bike.
